What Are Cognac Diamonds?
Cognac diamonds are natural brown diamonds with a rich, warm tone often accented by golden, orange, or reddish hues—resembling the color of fine cognac. Unlike colorless diamonds, their earthy brilliance is caused by trace elements like nitrogen within the crystal structure. Mined primarily from Australia’s Argyle Mine, cognac diamonds are cherished for their bold beauty and organic elegance, making them a unique choice for those who crave something naturally distinctive.
The Most Famous Cognac Diamond
The most famous cognac diamond is the Earth Star Diamond.
This remarkable gem weighs 111.59 carats and is known for its deep, rich cognac color and exceptional clarity. It was discovered in 1967 at the Jagersfontein Mine in South Africa, one of the oldest diamond mines in the world. The Earth Star was cut from a 248.9-carat rough stone and is notable for its size and color and its unusually high brilliance for a colored diamond.
The diamond was initially set in a ring designed by Baumgold Bros. and has since been displayed in various exhibitions, showcasing the stunning beauty and rarity of high-quality cognac diamonds.
